Moment Utah officers rescue girl, 12, from submerged van as mom frantically pleads for help

Stunning footage has revealed the moment two heroic cops rescue a 12-year-old girl from a flooded van as her mother frantically begs for help.

Utah’s Tooele City Police Department officers arrived on the scene shortly after the van drove into a reservoir.

As the girl’s mother watched, the desperate situation dawned on the heroic officers as one of them was heard saying to the other in the bodycam video, “We’re doing this.”

After several minutes of manic exertion, one of the officers decides to shoot out the window of the van so that the girl can be brought to safety.

The daring rescue took place earlier this month at Settlement Canyon Reservoir near Salt Lake City, Utah.

Footage of the incident began with an officer hurriedly stopping at the crime scene on the banks of the water, where the girl’s mother repeatedly yelled “Oh my God” as she rushed police out of their vehicle.

“Hey, take off your boots, we’re doing this,” says one of the officers, seemingly becoming more alarmed to learn that the victim is just 12 years old within.

He initially called for goggles and a crowbar, but it then became clear that the situation required urgent action, leading the officer to fire through the window instead.

“We’ve got to shoot it out, you’re not going to break it with the water here,” you heard one of the officers say.

With several bystanders joining the effort, minutes of anguished bodycam footage close when someone shouts triumphantly, “We’ve got an arm!”

“We got her out of the car, we’re starting CPR,” says one of the officers.

Tooele police told KSL-TV the girl is now recovering well and investigators believe the van accidentally rolled into the reservoir.

The fact that the agents were fortunately able to arrive so quickly was explained to ABC4 by the captain.

Colbey Bentley revealed that the two officers were checking the water level near the reservoir when a witness pointed them out after the van slid into the lake.

Another member of the rescue, Rebecca Sweat, shared the story fox13 that it was a ‘life or death situation’.

“I jumped out of our car, then I ran to the water and I saw a woman in the water up to her chest and she said, my daughter, my daughter, is in the water,” she said.

Sweat, who has been a lifeguard for 17 years, added: ‘With that training, I believe that helped save a life.

“So I yell, just bring her to me, bring her to me. I then performed the two rescue breaths, the other officer was out of the water around that time and started CPR.’

“It was a scary situation to put myself in, but with the experience I have… I felt like I knew what I was doing, but there was a lot of fear, shock, and then just being a mother, that feeling that you just have to save that baby.”

“I was in between all the area trying to get the tools back,” said her husband, Bryton Sweat. “Trying to get a hammer at them, to keep that safety line as close to them as possible.”

“She definitely has a place in our hearts,” he added. “We are so grateful that she is still with us. couldn’t be happier.’
