A woman’s body has been found in an apartment in northwestern Sydney.

Emergency services were dispatched to a block on Church St in Ryde just after 10.30am on Thursday following reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW quickly extinguished the blaze and managed to contain it to a single unit.

“A small fire had broken out in a unit on the second floor of a three-storey building,” said a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson.

“FRNSW crews, wearing breathing apparatus, immediately entered the smoke-filled unit and searched for occupants.”

Sweeping the unit found the body of a deceased woman with severe burns. She has yet to be identified.

The woman’s death is NSW’s second fatality since the start of winter.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
