A man found guilty of child crimes mocked a toxic chocolate bar while in jail.
The elderly man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was in the process of passing guilty pleas Friday for four child crimes when he pulled out the rat poison-laced Snickers bar.
He was on trial in Warrnambool District Court, western Victoria, where he was charged with molesting his partner’s young daughter.

Crime reporter Andrew Thomson had been in court to report for the Warrnambool standard when he saw the man take the chocolate bar out of his pocket.
When instructed by prison staff not to eat in court, the man proceeded to finish the Snickers bar, he reported.
“Then he told prison staff that he had poisoned himself because he smeared rat poison on the chocolate bar,” Thomson wrote.
The man, believed to be in his 70s, was remanded in custody despite his statement and later collapsed in Warrnambool police station cells, breaking a finger.
He was taken to Warrnambool Base Hospital where he was treated in the intensive care unit for poisoning.

It is clear that the amount of rat poison in the chocolate bar was not enough to kill the man.
The court announced this on Wednesday the man had been treated and that his condition had improved enough for him to be returned to Warrnambool Police Station holding cells.
In an opening statement, prosecutors alleged that the man had abused his victim between 1991 and 2000 while the girl was between the ages of four and 14.
The man is expected to be transferred to pre-trial detention September 11, where he will face a preliminary hearing.
