Virgil van Dijk calls on Liverpool to bring in more ‘quality additions’ to help title challenge

Virgil van Dijk calls on Liverpool to bring in more ‘quality additions’ to help Jurgen Klopp’s men fight for the title – as he hails the capture of Alexis Mac Allister as ‘something we need’

  • Virgil van Dijk believes that Liverpool should become stronger in the transfer market
  • The central defender is impressed by the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister
  • But believes that further ‘quality’ reinforcements are needed by the club

Virgil van Dijk is keen to see more ‘quality’ come to Anfield during the summer transfer window after the club endured a disappointing season last season.

The centre-back was part of a Liverpool side that failed to qualify for the Champions League, limping to a fifth-place finish in England’s top flight.

A lack of investment in the side was further highlighted by the club’s protracted injury crisis which continued for large periods of the season, but Liverpool appear to have learned from their mistakes with their recent acquisition of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.

Van Dijk is currently employed by the Dutch national team as he prepares for an upcoming Nations League semi-final with Croatia before embarking on a well-deserved break, but will be keeping an eye on developments at his club.

The veteran defender raved about Argentina’s World Cup winner Mac Allister when asked about Liverpool’s takeover of midfield.

“I think he is a very good player,” Van Dijk told reporters in his home country.

‘Of course we often played against him, also with the Netherlands against Argentina.

“I think he will definitely be a big addition and something we need to get back to where we all want to be,” he added.

The 31-year-old is seen as a leader in the Reds camp and his absence from crucial games last season left Jurgen Klopp facing a defensive crisis.

Liverpool scored 21 more goals (47) than during the 2021-2022 season (26) as opposition teams inflicted nine defeats.

They eventually finished 22 points behind eventual champions Manchester City, who achieved a historic treble comprising the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Van Dijk is keen to see Liverpool return to their title-challenging form the club has become so accustomed to under Klopp, but warned more new signings are needed to do so.

“So it’s a good start to the transfer window, hopefully we get a few more quality signings,” said Van Dijk.

“But he is certainly one of the players who hopefully can make a difference for us in the coming years.”
