  • The loss leaves the Blues 15th on the ladder

Carlton striker Harry McKay has lashed out at an ugly ‘minority’ of the club’s fans after supporters were videotaped swearing viciously at the team when they lost to Essendon last Sunday.

Footage uploaded to TikTok shows supporters yelling at the team as they make their way through the tunnel to their dressing room just after the siren at the MCG sounded, with a man shouting, “Take the jersey off! You all!’

‘You are a disgrace! A damn shame! Everyone, take it off! Take that damn sweater off!’ continues the man

He then targets Blues star Jack Silvagni, the son of club legend Stephen and grandson of Blues great Sergio.

The Blues were repeatedly labeled a ‘disgrace’ as they walked to their dressing rooms after losing by 34 points to arch rivals Essendon last Sunday

‘P**s off, Jack! Fuck off, Jack! You are a disgrace, a disgrace to your family!’ he bellows as other fans join in with their own abuse.

The 34-point loss was Carlton’s sixth straight loss and their eighth loss in their last nine games, leaving them 15th on the ladder after 13 rounds.

Blues fans have reacted furiously to the poor form, which is a result of a vastly improved performance in 2022 that saw the team narrowly missing out on the final.

Coach Michael Voss – in his second year at the helm – is under incredible pressure amid calls to fire him.

The last time Carlton suffered such a run of losses cost then-coach Brendon Bolton his job in 2019.

McKay insisted that the players were united to support Voss to the limit as he lashed out at the fans’ behavior and the effect it had on other spectators.

“I understand it’s a minority of supporters. Many of our fans have been fantastic all year and the passion and energy they bring to games,” he said.

“I think the minority in such situations is more disappointing for children and families.

‘You want to create an environment that is safe. Everyone likes to come to the footy so it’s disappointing to see the minority doing so.

“We want to make games at Carlton that everyone feels comfortable and safe in, so I want to thank the majority for doing that, but it’s disappointing that a few are jeopardizing that.”

“We’re big enough and ugly enough to handle some of the things being said about the fence.

“If you’re running away, I don’t think it helps the greater cause if you hear swear words and stuff when you’re running away, but I think it’s part of being a professional athlete.”

The Blues had a bonding session on veteran midfielder Ed Curnow’s ground in Torquay last week as they look for answers to try and regain their form from the start of the 2022 season.

‘In my eight years [at Carlton] I think this has been the tightest and most united group,” McKay said.

“When success on the pitch doesn’t necessarily come, it’s obviously very important to stay united and connected.

“I think in footy and in life, through your toughest times or your desperation, you get connected as a group and hopefully you can bounce back stronger from that and that’s definitely the belief as a group that even though it sucks right now, we are will be better off.’
