‘Soft and boring’: America’s Got Talent fans are calling for controversial Howard Stern to replace Simon Cowell after he claimed the once ruthless judge is now ‘too nice’
- Viewers noticed that Simon went from “hard” on Idol to “nice” on AGT
- The long-time TV judge believes his “softer” side emerged after the birth of his son
- He also thinks that editing has wrongly portrayed him as ‘mean’ on Idol
America’s Got Talent fans have called on controversial judge Howard Stern to come back after he claimed Simon Cowell has become too “empathetic.”
Simon, 63, has noticed the change himself, noting that the shift mainly came from becoming a father in 2014 to his son Eric.
While most have found Simon’s sensitivity acquired over the years personal, there are viewers who miss the “ruthless” judge.
Some viewers believe that since Simon Howard, 69, replaced AGT in 2015, the show has become “bland and boring.”

Others also think that AGT has become too ‘nice and positive’ and miss Simon’s stricter version.
Some have even toyed with the idea of bringing back the previous Judge Howard, who replaced Simon to “get the old AGT mojo back.”
A Reddit commenter wrote, “I’d love to have Howard back on the show. We need a little fairer judgment, and the King of Media would wind up AGT again.”
Another added: ‘Howard Stern is the greatest AGT judge of all time. He was a fair judge, didn’t give anyone special treatment and was downright hilarious.”
A third commenter misses the chemistry of the previous jury line-up: ‘Hey [Howard] never gave anyone the special treatment, no matter how old they were, or how sad their story was, and I miss his bickering with Howie, and hilarious one-liners and antics, because that’s what made the show so much fun to watch.”
A former AGT enthusiast gasps at a confusion: “AGT has become way too sensationalized since he became a judge, and I ended up losing a lot of interest in the show because of that.”
Previously, Simon has said he thought he mellowed after having a child.
“There’s no question that when you actually have a kid, you feel different because you understand how you’d feel if it was your son up there,” he told Peopleadding that his form of “judging” had changed.
Some suggested bringing back previous juror Howard (far left in photo with then-jurors Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie), who replaced Simon, to “get the old AGT mojo back”

He continued, “I’m very aware that the kids auditioning for AGT want to be there, they’re not pushed into it and they’re having a fun day out or we wouldn’t be seeing them.”
In addition to getting older, Simon believes he was mistaken for “tough” in his previous shows due to editing.
“I think X Factor and Idol were edited in such a way that I was always seen as this crabby, miserable whatever – which of course I am sometimes, but I’m not like that all day,” he said.
Simon believes that AGT’s editing is more focused on the optimistic moments.
“But on AGT there are so many feel-good moments that show that more than me tear people apart for being rubbish,” he said.
