Jurrien Timber leaves door open for Man United and Liverpool to lure him from Ajax
Jurrien Timber is leaving the door open for Manchester United and Liverpool to lure him away from Ajax this summer, admitting he is ‘not sure’ if he will stay at the youth club
- Timber’s comments suggest his future at Dutch club Ajax is uncertain
- Erik ten Hag may want to bring his former player to United this summer
- Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has also spoken highly of the young defender
Jurrien Timber has revealed his future at Ajax is uncertain, opening up an opportunity for potential suitors Manchester United and Liverpool.
The 21-year-old Dutch defender has progressed through Ajax’s youth academy to the senior squad, making 121 appearances since making his debut in 2020, but has recently been tipped to leave his youth club.
Two Premier League teams have reportedly been battling for over a year to bring Timber to England, and the Utrecht-born player was reluctant when questioned about his future at Ajax.
When asked by the Dutch website Today Inside what awaits him, Timber replied: ‘Will I still stay with Ajax? I’m not sure, I can’t say.
‘I’m not talking to Ajax right now. My agent has had a good talk a few times, but it’s not like we’re talking about anything now.’

Timber is currently under contract with Ajax until the summer of 2025.
United would be firm favorites to sign Timber, as manager Erik ten Hag previously worked with the defender at Ajax and has reportedly been interested in bringing him to Old Trafford since he arrived himself last summer.
Timber was also present at the 2023 FA Cup Final, in which ten Hag’s side lost 2-1 to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in London.
Liverpool are a more recent entry into the Timber race, but there is widespread belief that Jürgen Klopp’s Reds will sign a defender in the transfer window to run past their revamped midfield.
Compatriot Virgil van Dijk has claimed that Timber was at a higher level than he was when he was 21 years old.
Timber stated in April that ‘a transfer is getting closer’, although he previously stayed ‘out of love’ at his youth club Ajax.
Timber played 121 matches for Ajax seniors, while he also made 15 appearances for the Dutch national team.
