Kylian Mbappe is about to unleash a summer transfer saga after telling Paris Saint Germain he does not want to activate the one-year extension on his current contract.
The 24-year-old attacker informed the club in a letter that he did not want to make use of the extension clause, which would have him under contract until June 2025. direction the club is heading.
It means Mbappé has just one year left to complete his contract with Parc des Princes and the French champions will not risk letting their superstar go next summer for free.
PSG had been willing to give him more incentive to sign a long-term deal with plans to sign more France internationals and create a closer identity with the club’s fan base. Madrid want a replacement for Karim Benzema, who left for Saudi Arabia, but know that PSG would demand a world record fee for Mbappe and the Spanish side have already committed £88 million of their budget to sign Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.
PSG shelled out around £155 million to sign Mbappé from Monaco in 2018 and may now be considering making money to get some form of return on their investment.
Madrid have long had an interest in the France international and once again appear to be the standout choice as they hunt for a new striker.
Mbappé made a dramatic turnaround in 2021 after approaching Madrid in 2021 and was expected to join Los Blancos when his contract expired a year later.
However, he chose to stay with PSG and agreed to an extension that will take him to 2024.
The New York Times claim that if PSG make a bid for Mbappe, they could raise a price of over £160 million and possibly even more than the current world record amount.
The prolific frontman scored 29 goals in 34 league matches last season, securing his fifth Ligue 1 title during his spell at PSG and his sixth overall.
Extraordinarily, PSG could well lose Lionel Messi, Mbappé and Neymar all in the same summer. Messi will move to Inter Miami, while Neymar may move to Saudi Arabia.
