Transformers: Rise of the Beasts roars into theaters as The Little Mermaid flounders globally

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts soared to the top of the box office during its first weekend in theaters.

The action-adventure grossed an estimated $60.5 million domestically and cut through the web of the animated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Rise of the Beasts is the seventh film in the popular franchise that first launched in 2007.

This latest adventure is a prequel set in 1994.

Anthony Ramos, 31, and Dominique Fishback, 32, star as the humans who are first summoned by the Autobots and then join the Maximals, animal-shaped Transformers, in the battle to defend Earth against a planet-destroying god named Unicron .

The male-dominated ethnically diverse audience was Latino, 32 percent; white, 31 percent; Black, 21 percent; and Asian/Other, 16 percent, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Overseas, Rise of the Beasts made another $110 million, including a hefty $40 million in China for a worldwide gross of $79.4 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse dropped about 50 percent of its first-week earnings from $120.6 million to $55.4 million.

The film came in second place in its second week in theaters.

The animated performance featuring the voices of Shameik Moore, Hailee Stansfield and Bryan Tyree Henry has earned $313,347,201 worldwide.

Many fans have jumped at the idea that Hailee’s character, Gwen Stacy, a Spider superhero in an alternate universe, could be transgender.

Easter eggs in the film include a transgender flag hanging in Gwen’s room, with the words “Protect Trans Kids” printed on it.
