Manchester City’s Treble player ratings… Erling Haaland is a phenomenon

Manchester City secured the Treble by beating Inter Milan 1-0 in Saturday’s Champions League final.

Pep Guardiola’s side also won the Premier League and the FA Cup in a remarkable campaign.

Mail Sport’s Jack Gaughan assesses the impact of each City player this season.

Rodri has played the most games for City this season, taking the winner against Inter Milan

RODRI (55 applications) – 9.5

There was a point during his first season in 2019/20 when there were serious question marks over the central midfielder. But it’s hard to imagine a Pep Guardiola City without Rodri these days. A metronome and someone who has done it week in, week out without a break for months. And then she wins the Treble.

BERNARDO SILVA (54 applications) – 8.5

Silva’s crowning contribution to this Treble was undoubtedly his two goals in the semi-final against Real Madrid. He has returned to his old right-wing position in recent months as City chose a team that can give them control and relentless pressure.

ERLING HAALAND (52 apps) – 10

The best debut season produced by a foreign import in Premier League history. A phenomenon that has proved invaluable in a way that has meant Guardiola was able to change City’s game, helping to finally cross the line in Europe.

ILKAY GUNDOGAN (50 apps) – 9

Seems to improve with age. Class personified. A pure Guardiola midfielder who always plays along with important goals during the run-up. This year was no different as Gundogan has led the team in an exemplary manner after being elected captain following Fernandinho’s departure.

JULIAN ALVAREZ (49 apps) – 7.5

Seventeen goals in a debut season – from just 23 starts – would have been a big return if it weren’t for Haaland. Alvarez is often used from the bench but played a crucial role in the cup competitions. Also this year a World Cup medal for him.

JACK GREALISH (49 apps) – 8

An infectious personality with a big role in the dressing room, Grealish’s improvement this season is one of City’s Treble stories. Can add more goals, but his function in the team – holding the ball, driving forward – is invaluable to the team.

KEVIN DE BRUYNE (48 apps) – 8.5

The direct connection to Haaland was unsurprising and started towards the end of the campaign after Guardiola told him to ‘go back to basics’. City’s manager thought De Bruyne had forced too much and he has since blossomed.

RIYAD MAHREZ (47 apps) – 7.5

Will would have liked to play more in the biggest games but has been reduced to minutes off the bench instead. Big achievement as City came from two behind against Tottenham to score a hat-trick in the FA Cup semi-final with Sheffield United.

EDERSON (47 applications) – 7.5

The Brazilian was criticized for his shot stopping at the turn of the year. Since then, Ederson has completed a number of key saves in the Champions League run and appeared to be a calming influence as they chased Arsenal in the competition.

PHIL FODEN (47 applications) – 7.5

A bout of appendicitis around the March international break saw Foden drop down the pecking order. The England international seemed sharp and conjured up magical moments as a substitute. Emotional hat-trick against Manchester United in October.

MANUAL AKANJI (47 apps) – 8

Bought as a fifth-choice centre-back, an emergency Ā£15m signing from Borussia Dortmund in August, Akanji has made more appearances than any other defender. The Swiss has never let Guardiola down in various positions along the backline.

RUBEN DIAS (42 applications) – 8.5

No coincidence that City’s resurgence coincided with Dias becoming more prominent. His collaboration with John Stones has given a City extra solidity. Dias is also one of the more vocal team members, leading a pre-match huddle for the FA Cup final.

NATHAN AKE (40 apps) – 9

Some City stars think Ake is their Player of the Season. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury in recent weeks that saw him lose the left-back spot to Akanji. Starts to wander forward with more confidence and a solid defender who hardly ever looks flustered.

KYLE WALKER (38 apps) – 8

Another one that has peaked this season came to a crescendo. Guardiola suggested he not play too much in their new system, but Walker switched effortlessly between right-back and centre-back in City’s new take on their fluid formation.

JOHN STONES (33 apps) – 9

The game changer when operating between the center half and a No. 6. Stones has the tactical knowledge to take Guardiola’s instructions to the letter and his emergence in that new role has opened up the game for City. A huge fan favorite now.

JOAO CANCELO (26 apps) – 4

Cancelo was unhappy with a lack of minutes after the World Cup and made sure Guardiola knew about it. City had to let him go and offered Barcelona a chance before Bayern Munich came in. Cancelo played poorly and failed to reach his usual heights.

COLE PALMER (25 apps) – 6

Didn’t really take off as hoped, although the showings over the past few weeks have been very encouraging. Played out of position a lot. Needs regular matches and could go on loan in the summer. There’s definitely still some top potential left to unlock.

AYMERIC LAPORTE (24 apps) – 6

Heading for the exit door this summer after effectively becoming sixth choice at center half given Walker’s new role in a back three. Laporte was fantastic for City during his time there, although opportunities were limited after a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in February.

RICO LEWIS (23 applications) – 8

A star in the making. Guardiola credits Lewis with helping City climb out of a gap as a reversed right-back after the New Year. Knowledge of the game clearly outweighs his young age and a firm favorite among the coaching staff. Strong first year as a professional.

SERGIO GOMEZ (23 applications) – 5

Gomez, who was bought from Anderlecht last summer, could have left on loan but was retained after City pulled out of the race ahead of Marc Cucurella. The opportunities have come in the domestic cup competitions, with a few appearances in Europe.

KALVIN PHILLIPS (21 applications) – 5

Phillips has yet to start in a City shirt and only recently made his full Premier League debut. He wants to stay and prove himself at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola needs a substitute for Rodri who commands confidence and Phillips thinks he can earn that.

STEFAN ORTEGA (14 apps) – 7

Only one moment was he really criticized: after the bitter defeat against Southampton in the Carabao Cup. The esteem in which he is held was evident during the FA Cup final when Guardiola didn’t think twice about handing him the gauntlet on Ederson.
