  • Australia has taken a strong lead in the second innings

Marnus Labuschagne has explained that he was simply resting his eyes when he was abruptly called up at the Oval on Friday.

David Warner’s early dismissal in the second innings of Australia’s World Test Championship final against India forced the No. 3 to wake from his slumber, with cameras capturing the moment Labuschagne realized he had to pull up.

It sparked a viral moment online with fans finding the incident hilarious, but Labuschagne insists he was “just resting my eyes” as he prepared for his innings.

“I just rested my eyes between the balls and relaxed,” he told SEN Cricket.

“I tried to calm my nerves a bit, you can’t watch the game all the time, I went upstairs and woke up pretty quickly.”

He survived to the end of the game, but was quickly dismissed on Saturday morning, losing his wicket for 34 runs. With only 26 in his first strike, going into the Ashes is not the preparation he had hoped for.

Australia beat India for 296 on Day 3 of the showpiece Test to hold a strong lead of 173 as Warner and Usman Khawaja made their way to the crease in London.

Veteran opener Warner didn’t hang around too long, however, and fired a throw from Mohammed Siraj through to the keeper to score just one run.
