England cricketer Jonny Bairstow has announced he has become a father for the first time ahead of this summer’s Ashes.

Bairstow recently regained his place in the England test team after recovering from a horrific broken leg that left him out for more than six months.

He played in England’s dominant 10-wicket win over Ireland last week, and the 33-year-old is doing well off the pitch as well.

On Instagram on Wednesday, the wicket-keeper batsman revealed that his girlfriend recently gave birth to a baby boy.

Alongside a photo of him pushing a stroller, Bairstow wrote, “Happy to share with you that my girlfriend and I welcomed Edward Bairstow into the world! What a great time ahead! They are both doing excellently.’

The good news from Bairstow comes just days before the Ashes kick off next Friday in Edgbaston.

He enjoyed a golden summer last year, hitting four centuries against New Zealand and India to kickstart England’s resurgence under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum in the game’s longest form.

Having established himself as England’s leading man at the start of the ‘Bazball’ era, it was always a formality that he would return to the side when fit again.

He has been given extra responsibility this summer by taking over from Ben Foakes, and England will hope he can continue his ultra-aggressive approach with the bat against Australia.

England have not claimed the Ashes since 2015, but have won 11 of their 13 games since Stokes took charge of the team to build momentum heading into the five-game series.
