Ted Lasso spin-off: Cryptic Apple TV+ tweet about Ted Lasso gives fans goosebumps

Fans of the Emmy Award-winning AppleTV+ comedy “Ted Lasso” are sharing their excitement after the streaming service sent out a cryptic tweet to tease a spin-off.

On Tuesday — a week after the show’s potential series finale — AppleTV+ tweeted a picture of characters along with a puzzling caption.

“Smells like potential,” read the caption alongside a photo of Nick Mohammed as Nate Shelley, Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent and Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard.

Mohammed then quoted the tweet and added an emoji face with zipped lips.

The reports drove fans crazy, as many immediately jumped at the possibility of a fourth season or a spin-off without Emmy winner Jason Sudeikis involved.

Within hours of AppleTV+ sharing the screengrab of the season three finale, thousands of Twitter users responded with their hopes.

“I believe this show is coming back,” Twitter user Andreas Wolny wrote, referencing the show’s iconic “Believe” tagline.

“Need season 4,” another person replied.

“I think Ted Lasso’s tune shouldn’t be stopped, especially since it’s an international hit with a simple and good human and educational message,” one user speculated.

“The plot might need another facelift in Season 4, with maybe new players on the Richmond team and Ted and his team,” the user continued.

The teasing post was also shared on Instagram with AppleTV’s more than three million followers.

The photo of the three characters from the fictional AFC Richmond had more than 20,000 likes and hundreds of comments.

“Please stop teasing and announce the spinoff,” one Instagram user wrote.

“That caption is so teasing, honestly,” replied another.

Viewers have theorized that the series will return for another season after an Easter egg in the finale hinted at a name change in the future.

At the end of the 75-minute finale titled “So Long, Farewell,” Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso left a note in the book about AFC Richmond’s rise to fame on the show.

‘A small suggestion… I would change the title. It’s not about me. It never was,” Lasso wrote on the front page of the manuscript, originally titled “The Lasso Way.”

Fans have since shared their belief that the show will be renamed “We Are Richmond” or “The Richmond Way” in a spin-off that will see many of the original cast return.

Another key clue in the show’s return is the vague answers from the cast and crew leading up to the finale about whether or not season three will end.

In March, showrunner and series creator shared in an interview with deadline that Ted Lasso’s story would end in 2023, but avoided calling it the end.

“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we hoped to tell, that we loved to tell,” Sudeikis said.

Deadline added at the time when the “Saturday Night Live” alum didn’t want to add that the show was coming to an end.

Season three’s production had major hiccups due to the covid pandemic and Sudeikis’ custody battle with former fiancé and “Booksmart” director Olivia Wilde.

Finally, the show saw Lasso return from London to his son in Kansas after a penultimate episode chock-full of references to “The Wizard of Oz.”

One final hint at what’s in store for AFC Richmond’s characters came in the form of an Easter egg discovered by an eagle-eyed Twitter user.

One of the final clips in season three episode 12 features a shot of Richmond bartender Mae adjusting a picture on the wall in her bar.

The photo is the exact same one that “Cheers” character Sam Malone adapts on the wall of his bar at the end of the series.

Twitter user Jamie Jirak quoted the tweet, saying the reference refers to a spin-off a la “Frasier.”

“Cheers has spawned one of the greatest spin-offs of all time, so this could be a hint to more,” Jirak wrote before adding that Sudeikis is the cousin of ‘Cheers’ cast member George Wendt.

For now, the fate of the AFC Richmond club remains unknown.
