He played a wig shop owner and waterbed salesman who convinces the film’s protagonist (played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Cooper) to start his own waterbed business.

News of George DiCaprio’s cameo first surfaced from New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan, who shared some “outtakes” from his interview with Paul Thomas Anderson that didn’t make the cut.

Anderson revealed, “I took a picture of a guy who had a wig shop selling these waterbeds, and I couldn’t put my finger on it.”

The director said he knew someone who looked exactly like the picture he had for this character, and it finally occurred to him.

“And like a flash of lightning, I remember Leo’s dad looking just like that,” Anderson added.

The filmmaker said he “tracked him down” and asked if he would ever be interested in appearing in a movie and George said, “Of course.”

β€œI explained the scenario to him. He said, ‘Sounds good. Did Leo tell you I had a waterbed company?” Anderson said, revealing that the company was called “Foggy Bottom.”
