A man is fighting for his life in hospital after his car crashed 15 meters from an embankment in the middle of the night.

The driver, in his 20s, was heading east in south-east Queensland’s Lockyer Valley when his car went off the road at about 9:30pm Saturday.

It is believed he was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The Toowoomba-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was called to the scene, along with fire and emergency services and paramedics.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service set up a safety line along the embankment to allow personnel to reach the driver safely.

Emergency services carefully lifted the driver onto the embankment before he was flown in critical condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital

Paramedics, an intensive care physician and LifeFlight flight paramedic treated him at the scene before he was gently moved up the embankment.

He was then transferred to the waiting helicopter.

The man was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition.
