Earthquake hits Melbourne – just days after another series of quakes left locals terrified

  • Earthquake with a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale hit the Mornington Peninsula
  • The quake was registered shortly after noon
  • People reported feeling tremors in the Frankston area

Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula was hit by a magnitude 2.3 earthquake on Saturday.

The Bureau of Meteorology says there is no tsunami threat to Australia’s coasts from the quake.

“Based on the magnitude and location of this earthquake, the JATWC (Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre) has determined that there is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, island or territories from this earthquake,” the Bureau said.

According to Geoscience Australia, the quake struck just after noon.

Geoscience Australia reported that dozens of people felt the event in and around the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston.
