App-only car parks spark uproar in cathedral city

App-only car parks are causing a stir in cathedral city

Five car parks in a cathedral city only accept payment via mobile app – to the anger of campaigners and elderly motorists.

In the most recent example of the “parking meter deserts” trend, highlighted by the Mail, 359 places in Worcester will no longer take cash or cards.

Starting next month, shoppers and visitors will need to download the RingGo app to make mobile payments – or call a phone operator.

The city council says it is responding to the changing demand after a ‘sharp’ drop in cash payments.

And it claims the move barely covers one in six parking spaces it operates in Worcester.

Charity bosses and MPs have urged councilors to consider the impact on elderly motorists and struggling high streets.

Age UK said it was ‘hearing from more and more people’ in Worcestershire about app-only parking problems.
