A Scottish tourist has died after being run over by a tram in Barcelona.

Emergency services were alerted just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday evening after a pedestrian was hit.

Sources at City Hall confirmed late this afternoon that the victim is a 57-year-old Scotsman, confirming previous local newspaper reports on his age and nationality.

The incident took place near the Diagonal Mar shopping center in Barcelona and close to the Parc del Forum where Pet Shop Boys performed on Wednesday during the opening night of the Primavera Sound 2023 music festival.

People attending the concert had left around the time the unnamed man was knocked down and died.

It was not initially clear if he had been with the concertgoers, although the tram operators later told the local press that he was traveling in the opposite direction to people leaving the festival grounds.

A person with him, whose age and nationality have not yet been revealed, was unharmed and received psychological help today.

A police investigation was underway last night and the company that operates the tram service handed over video footage to assist investigators.

TRAM Barcelona said in a tweet earlier today: ‘TRAM would like to extend its condolences to the family and friends of the man who died in last night’s tragedy.’
