Jordan Neely’s uncle arrested on new robbery charges a week after he was released without bail
Jordan Neely’s uncle, whose death in a subway chokehold sparked outrage, has been rearrested on new grand larceny charges a week after appearing in court for similar crimes.
Christopher Neely, 44, was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly stealing a wallet last August, another in April, and stealing a $15,000 wallet from a chair at a Manhattan restaurant May 18.
He has been charged with three counts of grand larceny in addition to the 12 charges he already faces.
It is the second time in 10 days that Neely has been handcuffed when he was caught on May 22 while trying to flee from the New York Police Department’s pickpocket squad.
He appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on May 24 and was released without bail after his lawyer claimed his cousin’s death had taken a “terrible toll” on him and that he couldn’t go to jail because he was a “rock” to his family.

Neely was previously arrested near the Port Authority Bus Terminal near Manhattan’s Garment District last Monday.
He was spotted by officers who recognized him as a known robber, sources told The New York Daily News, and he jumped the turnstile before being chased and caught by an officer around 11:35 p.m.
Neely was reportedly armed with a gravity knife and carrying several bank cards in other people’s names.
And he had seven credit cards with different names in his possession, said Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Evan Rufrano.
He was charged with four felonies, including possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, bail, and unlawful possession of weapons. He was also charged with eight offenses.
At last week’s court hearing, prosecutors requested that he be held on $10,000 bail.

“Christopher Neely has been a rock to the family and cares for them,” his lawyer Gurmeet Singh told a Manhattan court last week.
They argued that he had been served a warrant for allegedly violating his five-year probation following a 2019 grand larceny case for which he served six months in prison.

“It has been a very difficult experience for the family, a very moving experience,” the public defender told the court.
“Christopher Neely has been a rock to the family and takes care of them.”
Neely was due to appear in court again on Wednesday, but he was arrested by authorities on new charges before he could appear.
“I don’t see Mr. Neely?” Judge Josh Hanshaft asked at the hearing.
It is the second time in 10 days that Neely has been handcuffed when he was caught on May 22 while trying to flee from the New York Police Department’s pickpocket team.

Singh said, “Mr. Neely, as I understand it, was picked up this morning. He is currently in custody.’
Prosecutors allege that on August 19, 2022, Neely stole a woman’s wallet and then spent $8,650 on her credit cards.
And he is accused of stealing another victim’s wallet on East 82nd Street in April and a $15,000 wallet from a Mexican restaurant on Church Street in Tribeca this month.
His trial has been postponed to July 19 after his arrest.
Prosecutors revealed that Neely has been arrested at least 20 times since June 2022, while on probation, for grand larceny or criminal possession of stolen property.
He has two dozen previous convictions, including rape, robbery and burglary. He was also wanted on an outstanding grand larceny charge – which had violated his probation from a previous case.
His cousin Jordan’s funeral was held in Harlem last Friday.
It was attended by politicians, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who claimed that Jordan was “killed.”
On May 1, Penny put Neely in a fatal chokehold on a New York subway
Jordan, who has previously been convicted of assaulting subway passengers, was stopped by Penny after he allegedly threatened people in the train car.
Penny put him in a chokehold on the F train at Broadway-Lafayette Street and Bleecker Street station on May 1.
The former Marine has since been charged with second-degree manslaughter and released on $100,000 bail following angry protests and accusations of racism.
Penny broke his silence on Saturday by saying Neely’s death had nothing to do with race, claiming he did what he thought was right and would behave the same way if put in the same situation again.
