Inter Miami fans turned on coach Phil Neville on Wednesday night, holding up signs calling for him to be sacked following his defeat to the New York Red Bulls.

Miami are last in the Eastern Conference, having two wins from their last 13 games, along with a miserable 15 point tally from as many games.

The Red Bulls, in the process of rebuilding under new coach Troy Lesesne, took three points thanks to a second-half goal from Tom Barlow on a rainy night in Miami – the weather delayed the start of the game by nearly 50 minutes.

Miami missed a penalty in the first minutes of the game, Leonardo Campagna fired a tame attempt straight at goalkeeper Carlos Coronel.

Neville came out fighting in his post-game press conference when he ruined another game in which Miami had a lot of possession, but again very little in terms of sharpness in the final third.

“Our results haven’t been good enough,” Neville admitted. “We have to accept the criticism that comes our way.

“I honestly don’t think there’s a team that came to the Miami stadium and was better than us,” he added. “I honestly think so.”

It comes on the same day reports surfaced again that the David Beckham-owned franchise could have new hopes of an incredible deal to sign Lionel Messi.

Reports have claimed that Messi will sign for Miami and loan him to Barcelona for a fairytale return to the team where he spent the golden years of his career. He would then eventually move to the MLS with Miami.

But in the meantime, Beckham and co-owners Jorge and Jose Mas must make a big decision about Neville.

Earlier in May, there were tentative signs of an upturn in form for Miami with two straight wins against Atlanta United and New England.

But now Neville’s team is spiraling again. Before the game, Neville called on his players to be inspired by the Miami Heat’s run-up to the NBA Finals.

Unfortunately for the former Manchester United man, his team looked completely uninspired. As fan dissatisfaction grows, Marcel loses his way.

Next up is a familiar face for Neville – if he still has a job on Saturday night – with Wayne Rooney’s DC United up next.

United should have taken all three points after taking an early 2-0 lead through goals from Donovan Pines and Theodore Ku-DiPietro.

Instead, their opponents – CF Montreal – struck twice within two minutes to steal a point in the nation’s capital.

Sunusi Ibrahim put the ball into the back of the net in the 80′ and Ariel Lassiter sealed the tie in the 82′.
