Westpac’s musical footy-themed State of Origin ad that attempts to get footy fans to like bankers and umpires is being toasted as viewers label it “the absolute worst thing ever seen on TV”
Footy fans have criticized Westpac’s State of Origin ad as the bank went with a music-inspired commercial ahead of the big game in Adelaide.
After last year’s Just Eat ad – spearheaded by US music superstar Katy Perry – failed to impress viewers at home, Westpac opted to try out a melodious ad, featuring a beleaguered umpire and banker.
The duo expressed dismay at their unpopular reputation with the public, before coming together in a dramatic finale with the spotlight on the couple in the middle of a football field.
The ad ends with the Westpac and NRL logos next to the message: “Proudly bring fans the footy.”

But fans weren’t convinced by the ad.
“I honestly think the #Westpac ad is one of the most misguided ads I’ve ever seen,” said one fan.

“That new Westpac ad makes me want to puke on my own vomit!” said another fan.
A third footy fan added, “I’ll attack that Westpac banker man on the shoulder.”
Other fans asked how the quirky ad was approved by the company’s bosses.
“Who designed your new ad?” a fan asked Westpac. “Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.”
Another fan wrote, “Whoever signed that Westpac ad should be fired immediately.”
