A courageous family dog fended off a black bear after it snuck into a home in upstate New York.
Stephanie Behren’s labradoodle Harper spotted the black bear prowling the kitchen of her Chatham home last Monday.
A security camera in the living room captured the moment when the curious bear poked his nose through the glass patio door and hesitantly crept into the house.
The bear is seen creeping up to the counter, as if looking for food.
The pale labradoodle wearing a purple and white bandana hears a noise and bursts in from another room.
The black bear hesitantly pokes its head around the door before entering the house
The dog charges at the bear, who flees back out the door.
Mrs. Behren, dressed in black and white sportswear, then rushes into the room and quickly closes the outside door to prevent the bear from reentering.
This seems like a smart move, as the bear reappears in front of the glass.
Harper is then heard barking loudly at the unwelcome guest who, after trying one last time to enter the kitchen, decides to sneak across the yard to some trees.
Mrs. Breher can also be heard shouting the bear ‘Go! Hi! Go away!’.
Black bears are more likely to seek human food sources in the spring and summer, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.
New York State is home to approximately 6,000-8,000 black bears that can be found in all regions of New York State from spring to fall.
The ministry advises locals and visitors to avoid encounters with bears by storing garbage safely, not leaving food for birds, and not leaving messy grills or pet food outside.

It is also illegal to deliberately feed the bears in New York State.
A similar encounter was recently documented by Homeland Security in North Carolina, when a man was alerted to a black bear a few feet away by the sound of his Ring doorbell.
David Oppenheimer was lying outside his home in Ashville in the Blue Ridge Mountains Tuesday night when he heard his doorbell alarm go off and turned to see a bear right in front of him.
“I looked behind me and saw nothing,” Oppenheimer told CNN, “but about a minute later the bear came by and was practically in front of me.”
The two stare into each other’s eyes for a few seconds, seemingly momentarily startled, before the bear scrambles away in the direction it came from.
