Adam Pascale, chief scientist at the Seismology Research Centre, said there was also another earthquake in Ferntree Gully shortly after 5pm.

A man living in Beaconsfield, south-east of Melbourne, claimed he had ‘heard’ it.

“I thought it was a rumble when I looked on the weather radar and there was no rain to be seen,” he wrote on Facebook.

It was also felt in the Dandenong Hills, about 35 km east of Melbourne’s city centre.
