Jets general manager Joe Douglas is confident he can secure an extension for star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
After an off-season that saw Douglas swing for Aaron Rodgers and Allen Lazard, the GM and his staff are confident that a deal can be struck in the coming weeks.
“I’m not worried at all,” said national team coach Robert Saleh. “That thing is done, and it will be here.”
Unlike a few years ago where the Jets were more than willing to dump another star defensive player in Jamal Adams, New York seems to place a high value on Williams and want him to stay for the long haul.
According to the New York Post, indications suggest that Williams — the Jets’ first pick of 2019 — will become the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league after Aaron Donald.

According to former NFL agent Joel Corry, there could be a number of things holding both sides back from a deal.
“It could be the length of the contract,” Corry told the Post. “The market is set at four years, so if the Jets want five years, it won’t be done until they’re willing to pay hard for the fifth year. … Or, if he’s looking for $25 million to $30 million a year, that’s the other reason.”
Recent deals for Commanders DT Daron Payne, Titans DT Jeffery Simmons and Giants DT Dexter Lawrence all indicate the market for Williams could try to keep him at Florham Park longer than the aforementioned players – who signed four-year deals.
It is thought that William’s agent, Nicole Lynn, wants her client to have a shot at a free agency within four years.
After Payne and Lawrence signed $90 million extensions and Simmons signed a $94 million deal, it is believed Williams could push the market further.
But no deal is worth more than three-time Defensive Player of the Year, Aaron Donald
“Once the Simmons deal was done, that became Quinnen Williams’ floor,” said Corry. “He’s going to say, ‘Who was First Team All-Pro last year? I want at least $24 million a year.’ I can understand why he would want that [to average] $25 million.
“That’s not an unreasonable question. There shouldn’t be such a big gulf between Aaron Donald and everyone else.”
Aaron Donald’s contract is currently the cap on defensive tackles and earns $31.6 million a year.
If New York is not satisfied with the terms of what Williams wants, they can force his hand and let him play for the next season on his fifth-year option, where he would earn $9.6 million.
