According to Down Detector, the problems started around 2pm BST and are affecting users across the UK.

To date, more than 260 complaints have been registered on Down Detector.

Of those who reported problems, 63 percent said they struggled with the website, while 35 percent said the problem was with the app.

On Twitter, someone wrote: ‘British Airways is your website down? Haven’t been able to watch flight etc flying home from US tomorrow.”

Another added: ‘Can you tell me when your website will be back online? Trying to check in for my flight. Can’t believe it’s down. Can you please give me and everyone else an update.’

Speaking to MailOnline, a British Airways spokesperson confirmed it had found a “technical issue” on the website.

“Our teams are working hard to resolve a technical issue we encountered this afternoon. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience,” they said.

“Flights will continue and customers can continue to check in at the airport.”
