From fear of bananas to a creepy cartoon character: The Clearing cast reveal their deepest terrors
The cast of Disney+ thriller The Clearing have exposed their deep-rooted fears – ranging from childhood wallpaper and feline friends to… a banana.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia during the premiere, the cast didn’t hold back.
Kate Malvany revealed a unique phobia that stemmed from her childhood battle with cancer that left her hairless and intimidated by the Holly Hobbie wallpaper that adorned her bedroom.
“The cartoon character on the wall, with her luxurious hair, always felt like she was mocking me,” Malvany said.
At night it seemed like she turned into a hair-brushing monster. That wallpaper was my personal fear.’

Gary Sweet of House Husbands, who brought Wilkes’ character to life in the series, explained his own peculiar fears: cats and bananas.
“I’m allergic to both,” Sweet admitted with a chuckle.
And believe it or not, bananas used to be my favorite fruit! The allergy hit when I was around 45, and I’m the same with cats. And you know what else scares me? Lots of scary movies, even if you know how they were made.’

Gracie Otto, the actress-turned-director who co-created much of the series with Jeffrey Walker, candidly admitted that she was afraid of ghosts.
Fear of the dark, on the other hand, plagues Hazem Shammas, the actor who plays Yusuf Joe Saad.
‘I have a vivid imagination. Even now I’m constantly looking over my shoulder,” Shammas revealed.

As for Gracie Otto, the actress-turned-director who co-created much of the series with Jeffrey Walker, she candidly admitted that she had a fear of ghosts.
His fascination with thrillers and true crime dramas didn’t do much to curb his anxiety, especially as he immersed himself in a world of cults and sinister human darkness while preparing for his role.
“At one point I had to be pulled out — it got too dark,” he admitted.
Meanwhile, Claudia Karvan, who describes her character as “direct and assertive,” says she’s always had a fear of sharks growing up.
The psychological thriller is an adaptation of JP Pomare’s bestseller In the Clearing, which in turn was inspired by the real-life Australian doomsday cult The Family, set in the countryside outside Melbourne in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
The Star Original series The Clearing can only be streamed on Disney+.
