Police shoot a man dead in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs near a busy supermarket: shirtless man threatened locals with two large knives

A man has been shot dead by police in one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs in front of shocked bystanders after threatening locals with several large knives.

Police were called to Alexander Avenue in North Willoughby shortly before 11:30 a.m. Thursday following reports from residents of a shirtless man knocking on the doors of several homes with two knives.

When police arrived on the scene on Sydney’s north shore, the gunman reportedly confronted two officers before one officer fired their firearm.

The man died on the spot.

No other injuries were reported.

The terrifying incident took place in front of shocked bystanders at a busy Harris Farm market nearby.

2GB breakfast host Ben Fordham was nearby when the shooting took place.

“First of all to everyone in the area, if you know there is a very serious police operation going on around Willoughby right now,” he told colleague Deborah Knight.

“You’d be wise to avoid it if you can.

“Shots were heard near Willoughby.”

Dozens of police officers arrived on the scene as an investigation into critical incidents was launched.

The State Crime Command’s Homicide Unit will investigate all circumstances surrounding the man’s death, including the firing of a police weapon.

A report will also be prepared for the coroner.

The latest critical incident investigation comes hours after the great-grandmother who was allegedly tasered by a senior officer at a Cooma nursing home last year died.

Clare Nowland, 95, died in hospital on Wednesday night, surrounded by her grandmother, after receiving end-of-life care for a week.

Senior Constable Kristian White has been charged in connection with the taser incident.
