Bakhmut is the scene of the longest and bloodiest battle of the Russian war in Ukraine.
The 10-month battle has reduced the eastern salt mining town to a skeleton, with most schools, apartments and shops razed or heavily damaged.
The fighting has subsided and Ukrainian forces still control the southwestern outskirts of the city of Bakhmut, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister Hanna Maliar said.
Russia has claimed full control of Bakhmut, with President Vladimir Putin congratulating his troops and the mercenary Wagner Group.
