Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said NFL owners will extend Roger Goodell’s contract through 2027.
NFL owners are finalizing the terms of a contract extension with Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Goodell tipped his hat to owners who huddled for two days in Eagan, Minn., to discuss league matters and rule changes.
“It has not been extended today. That’s for sure,” Goodell said of his upcoming contract extension with a focus on league-wide matters.
Speaking of his own pay and contract, Goodell “undoubtedly” has a contract extension, as Irsay told media on Tuesday.

Goodell has ‘no doubt’ a contract extension will be made following talks with the owners on Tuesday
The commissioner added that he “loves his job” after the owners discussed his contract on Tuesday.
“Progress is definitely being made,” said Falcons owner Arthur Blank.
Future meetings will discuss whether owners continue with the idea of dividing the powers of the commissioner into multiple roles. Irsay said that at the meeting just completed, there was another energetic conversation about how to split the role into a corporate affairs CEO and another serving as NFL commissioner.
“It’s something that has come up,” Goodell said. ‘It’s a healthy discussion to have.’
Irsay said the new contract would ‘apparently’ be Goodell’s last as he plans to retire. But Irsay provided good health and a desire to return could bring the two sides back to the negotiating table for another renewal in a few years.
It would be Goodell’s fourth overtime since taking over Paul Tagliabue in 2006
The new deal for Goodell, said to be incentive-heavy, is expected to be the most lucrative for any commissioner in any sport, ESPN reported in March. Goodell reportedly earned $63.9 million annually in 2020 and 2021.
This would be Goodell’s fourth overtime since taking over from Paul Tagliabue in September 2006. The previous renewals were in 2009, 2012 and 2017.
There was no approval for the sale of the Washington Commanders at the meeting, but Goodell said the owners are willing to approve Josh Harris’ offer to buy the franchise from Daniel Snyder.
“We will work as soon as possible. We as a committee will do the thorough work we need to do, and we will approve it when it’s done,” Goodell said.
