Tottenham chief Daniel Levy ‘holds talks over data-driven model’ for transfers

Daniel Levy ‘holds talks with betting experts about adopting a data-driven approach to signing’ at Tottenham following success of Brentford and Brighton models

  • Spurs chairman Levy previously expressed skepticism about data-driven recruiting
  • But Brighton and Brentford’s progress has reportedly changed his mind
  • Reports say the club’s next sporting director may have to adopt the approach

Daniel Levy hopes to revolutionize Tottenham’s approach to recruitment and has reportedly held talks with betting experts about developing a data-driven model.

The success of Premier League clubs such as Brentford and Brighton taking such an approach seems to have sparked a change of heart from the Spurs chairman, who was previously skeptical of such ideas.

The Report from the Daily Telegraph Levy wants to use data to more accurately analyze better performing players in smaller leagues around the world.

Levy has been the subject of fan fury this season after Spurs slipped back from being on course for Champions League qualification and possibly missed out on Europe altogether. They lost 3-1 to Brentford at home on Saturday.

They are in eighth place going into the final day of the season, one point behind Aston Villa who occupy the place in the Europa Conference League.

The Telegraph says part of Levy’s remit for the sporting director he wants to recruit is to use data to make decisions about recruiting, as well as which existing players to keep or sell.

The aim is to extract maximum value from the transfer market to keep pace with the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Chelsea and other wealthier clubs.

The identities of those who allegedly met Levy remain a closely guarded secret.

Spurs are looking to appoint a new sporting director for the summer transfer window following the departure of Fabio Paratici following his global football ban over alleged irregular financial practices while working for Juventus.

Mail Sport reported earlier this month that Roma chief Tiago Pinto and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Markus Krosche were among the names under consideration.

Levy has already appointed Scott Munn as the club’s new Chief Football Officer.

Meanwhile, the search for a new manager continues, with Spurs facing the prospect of paying Feyenoord more than £6m in compensation to hire Arne Slot.

Ryan Mason is the current interim boss after Antonio Conte was sacked in March, with Slot, who has just won the Eredivisie title, currently leading the pack.
