Warning: President Joe Biden
President Joe Biden has dashed hopes that a deal on the US debt ceiling can be reached in the coming days — calling the Republican offers “unacceptable.”
Republicans and Democratic politicians have argued over whether to raise or suspend the debt ceiling, which determines how much money the government can borrow.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned last week that if they fail to reach a deal, the government could run out of money by June 1.
But talks last Friday ended without progress.
Speaking of the Republicans at the G7 meeting in Japan yesterday, Biden said: “Much of what they have proposed is simply unacceptable.
It is time for the Republicans to accept that there is no bipartisan deal that can only be made on their partisan terms. They also have to move.’
The Democratic leader also suggested that some Republicans would use the disastrous economic fallout of a US economic default to undermine his chances of re-election next year.
