Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew has revealed how her acting on set unintentionally caused her own premature birth.
The now 42-year-old spoke to hosts Sean Hayes and Dr. Priyanka Wali on the HypochondriActor podcast.
The star, who played doctor April Kepner for nine seasons, revealed how a traumatic birth scene a month early “caused her own contractions.”
She said she was initially overcome with guilt after thinking she had “chosen her career over her baby’s safety” – but has since acknowledged it wasn’t her fault.

The actress revealed that the storyline saw her character (pictured) pregnant with a child who had a deadly disease that left it in pain.
In the podcast episode, which appeared on Wednesday, Sarah explained the shocking situation.
Of her appearance on Season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy, she said, “I was playing a story where I was pregnant and my child in the womb had a deadly disease that caused pain.
“I had to do an induction abort and hold the baby in my arms as he died — and I had to film the delivery and the death scene like when I was eight months pregnant.”
The star continued, “I shot that scene. You see the pain in my face and it was kind of done stylized so I wasn’t coughing and shoving or anything [but] I ball to create what it looks like “my god, I feel like the baby is coming.”
“And then I hold this little animatronic baby as it pleases, dies in my arms.”
Shockingly, Sarah then said, “10 hours later I went into premature labor.”
The actress, who claimed she “induced her own labor,” revealed she was completely unprepared.
And, worryingly, her newborn daughter spent 11 days in the neonatal intensive care unit due to breathing problems.

The mother-of-two then revealed that she had since been able to forgive herself and acknowledge that it wasn’t her fault
Discussing the developments, she revealed, “It’s all like you punching me in the face — like every part of it, because I had I thought I had a whole month left.”
And then there’s guilt for choosing to play the storyline.
“So I’m like, ‘Oh, I did this to my baby. I chose my career over my baby’s safety and well-being.'”
The mother-of-two then revealed that she had since been able to forgive herself and acknowledge that it wasn’t her fault.
The New York native was in shock after being “let go” of ABC’s hit medical drama at the end of Season 14.
She said at the time that her “confidence was shaken,” but added, “I believe in things that happen for a reason and finding beauty in the midst of sadness.
“I don’t regret it and don’t begrudge anyone. I embrace it. I had a profound and incredible season of my life on Grey’s Anatomy.’
