Kevin de Bruyne freaked out at Pep Guardiola during Manchester City’s win over Real Madrid on Wednesday night, with the midfielder angrily gesturing at his manager after being robbed of possession.

City dismantled Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final showdown and placed four past the reigning European champions at the Etihad Stadium to reserve their place in next month’s final.

An excellent double from Bernardo Silva in the first half put the hosts in full control, before Eder Militao’s own goal and a late strike from Julian Alvarez sealed defeat and secured a second final appearance in three years.

Before they crossed the line, however, tempers flared between De Bruyne and Guardiola the pair were seen rowing early in the second half.

Guardiola was left seething as the Belgian drove forward with the ball just inside Madrid’s half and, after failing to spot a possible pass to Jack Grealish on the left, was stripped of possession by Militao.

But instead of accepting the criticism that came his way, De Bruyne lost his cool and reacted angrily to his manager, throwing his arms in the air before continuing with the match.

After they exchanged apparently very loud, hostile words, Guardiola walked back to the City bench, staring at the floor.

As the half progressed, fears of another spectacular late comeback from Madrid in the semi-final were allayed when Militao turned the ball into his own net with 14 minutes remaining.

With victory in his pocket, Guardiola then opted to replace De Bruyne for Phil Foden in the 84th minute of the match, and as he left the pitch the two left their heated exchange behind to enjoy a celebratory hug.

Alvarez then added City’s fourth of the night in stoppage time to cap off one of their best performances in their history.

While the English champions were excellent at beating Carlo Ancelotti’s men and can now look forward to a final clash with Inter Milan in Istanbul, Guardiola was still unimpressed with certain parts of their game and explained his fallout with The Brown out.

“We rushed a lot at 2-0,” he told Spanish broadcaster Movistar.

‘Right after the break [Ilkay] Gundogan lost a ball, Kevin made three transitions that were unnecessary and we often rushed when we had to do the opposite, sink and turn, sink and turn.

‘But it’s normal. It comes close, you rush, and it cost us more, although overall we played an extraordinary game.’

Nevertheless, after their traumatising collapse in the final stages of last season’s semi-finals, Guardiola was delighted with the character his side showed to bounce back this time.

“I felt in recent days that we had a mix of calmness and the intention to play these kinds of games,” said Guardiola.

β€œAll the pain we had last year was there today. The way we lost was really tough. We had to swallow the poison and say “I want it”.

‘It was there, the energy of a year. This team is so humble. I am so proud. They take every game so seriously. I hate arrogance when you think you are something you are not. Today they got their reward. Life always gives you a second chance.’
