Disney’s Little Mermaid remake gives a subtle dig at Kate Middleton

The Little Mermaid is one of Meghan Markle’s favorite Disney movies, and it’s now been suggested that the live action remake will include a dig at her estranged sister-in-law.

A critic who saw an early screening of the film has suggested there is a subtle dig at Kate, the Princess of Wales, in the script.

Speak against Page six the reviewer pointed to the scene where Ariel and Prince Eric meet, after she gives up her voice to surface and he has to try and guess her name because she can’t speak.

His first guess is Diana. His second guess is Catherine, but after that [Ariel gives a disgusted] response, he [concludes] “OK, definitely not Catherine.”

They continued, “Disney would be disingenuous to suggest that those name choices were accidental.”

As many viewers of the film already know, Diana is the name of Prince Harry’s late mother, who died in August 1997 after a car accident in Paris.

While Catherine is the full name of his sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, better known as Kate.

Meghan previously admitted that she drew a comparison between the Little Mermaid and her own relationship with Prince Harry.

She even admitted to identifying with the mermaid in her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Speaking to Page Six, the reviewer admitted that a scene between fictional character Ariel and Prince Eric (pictured) seemed to get pretty literal

She recalled seeing the 1989 classic animation during her difficult time in the UK after marrying Harry in 2018.

Meghan said, “I went, ‘Oh my God, she’s falling in love with the prince and she’s losing her voice because of it.'”

The new remake of The Little Mermaid stars Halle as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric and is directed by Rob Marshall.
