The Little Mermaid is expected to make a big splash when it hits theaters over Memorial Day weekend.
Current projections show that the live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic raked in $110 million in its four-day opening weekend, according to Deadline.
If the much-anticipated film rakes in that box office, it will become the eighth-biggest Memorial Day debut.
The biggest currently is last year’s Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $160.5 million in its four-day scoring period.
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and feisty young mermaid with a thirst for adventure.
Ariel, the youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most rebellious, longs to learn more about the world beyond the sea and falls for the impetuous Prince Eric while visiting the surface.
Although mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, allowing her to experience life on land, but ends up putting her life – and her father’s crown – in danger.
Speaking to Edition magazine, lead actor Halle Bailey talked about the pressure cooker of film production, saying, “I pushed myself as far as I ever pushed myself in life.
“And I feel like the message from her was to know you always had it in you.”
