Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has revealed she almost turned down the chance to lead the Australian delegation at King Charles’ coronation because she feared it would clash with her commitments to Chelsea.
Kerr, 29, also said carrying the Australian flag after being selected by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was a “great honour”.
Incredibly, just over 24 hours after watching the King crowned, she was on the scoresheet for the Blues against Everton.
“I got the chance to be a part of it about a month ago when I was in an international camp,” Kerr told Manchester United ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup final.
“I originally thought Everton’s game was on the same day, so I thought it was impossible, but Emma [Hayes, Chelsea’s manager] and the club was kind enough to let me in.

Kerr is also preparing to face the Women’s World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from July 20.
Kerr added that being the flag bearer of such a prestigious world event is “something I’ll probably tell my kids about in 10 to 15 years.”

But before beating her country, she will be chasing more silverware with Chelsea as they battle for the Women’s Super League title and FA Cup against the Red Devils.
The FA Cup final is this Sunday at Wembley – and the Aussie can’t wait to run in front of a sold-out crowd of 90,000 fans.
“I like playing at Wembley. It’s probably my favorite stadium in the world to play in just based on when you go there, it’s a big game,” said Kerr. Fairfax.
‘This team [Chelsea] always stepping forward when there’s a big occasion, so it’s going to be great. My family is coming so it will be very exciting.
“The girls told me very quickly that if you want to win one trophy in England, it’s the FA Cup. So it’s very important to us.’
