Eurovision fans were left stranded on Tuesday after a BBC reporter mistakenly interviewed a fan instead of Finnish newcomer Kaarija.

The first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest took place on Tuesday, with Kaarija singing his song Cha Cha Cha, one of 10 selected acts to advance to the final on Saturday.

Following a show preview, BBC North West Tonight broadcast a selection of interviews with fans expressing their support for the contestant.

Speaking to an unidentified man in a similar luminous green top that Kaarija wore on stage, the reporter said, “We even managed to catch up with the main man himself.”

The tagline under the interview, held in the host city of Liverpool, also read ‘Kaarija – Finland participant’.

The presenter asked the man about Liverpool as the host city and the man said: ‘Incredible. Compared to all other countries where I have been (or have been), this is better organized.

‘Everything is walking distance, and it’s just so friendly. Everything is so easy here. It’s unbelievable.’

The BBC later revealed their confusion was a case of ‘Eurovision fever’ as anticipation builds for Saturday’s grand final.

Eurovision fans were let down by the gaffe and took to Twitter to share their reactions to the moment.

One person said, “This is the best thing I’ve ever seen” while another said, “This is gold…I’m still laughing now!”

Someone else wrote, “The funny thing is he had never heard of him and yet was dressed like this.”

And another said, “Pwahaha,” clearly amused by the confusion.

A BBC North West Tonight spokesperson said: ‘This was a case of Eurovision fever. We hope the real Käärijä will join us on North West Tonight so we can apologize and wish him well for the Grand Final.”

It comes after Rebecca Ferguson turned heads on Tuesday when she delivered an amazing performance in the first semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest.

The singer, 36, looked nothing short of sensational in a voluminous ruffled orange dress.
