BBC ‘cancel cooking show after just one series due to over-saturated market’

‘It seems Britain has lost its appetite for food’: BBC ‘cancel cookery show after just one series due to oversaturated market’

Britain’s Top Takeaways has reportedly been axed by the BBC after just one series.

The eight-part BBC2 show was led by Sara Cox and Darren Harriott and debuted last year.

It saw the UK’s independent takeaways compete to be crowned the best in the country.

But it has reportedly been canceled and will become the latest cooking show to be axed due to genre oversaturation.

ITV’s Bad Chefs and Channel 4’s The Great Cookbook Challenge with Jamie Oliver were also recently dumped.

Speak against The sun, a TV insider said: ‘The spate of canceled cooking shows on the schedules suggests viewers are getting fed up. It seems that Britain doesn’t like food anymore.

It’s a saturated market with so much competition, so it’s no surprise that some shows find it hard to stand out.

“But it’s especially hard for Sara and Darren’s to be cleared after just one run because he didn’t have time to grow.”

The show each episode featured five eateries from the same industry competing in the purpose built Top Takeaway Kitchen.

The food was delivered to local households, which determined the winner.

At the show’s launch last May, Sara said, “When I first heard about this show, they had me at the takeaway!”

‘Especially lately it has become something of an event at our house.

‘I love celebrating the takeaway and finding the very best in Britain.

“And if that means eating all the leftover chips and putting half a brick on them, then so be it.”
