Neera Tanden moves up White House ladder after ‘Voldemort’ and ‘Vampires’ tweets
‘Voldemort’ and ‘Vampires’ tweets about Republican senators dislike Neera Tanden moving up White House ladder: Biden aide promoted to replace Susan Rice in top domestic policy position
- Tanden serves as Biden’s staff secretary and senior adviser
- Her nomination to lead the OMB exploded over her previous tweets
- Susan Rice leaves the post after two years
President Joe Biden has appointed Neera Tanden as his domestic policy adviser following Susan Rice’s departure — as the White House aide puts her scathing tweets about Republicans in the rearview mirror.
The tweets — which included Sen. Mitch McConnell calling “Voldemort” and Sen. Susan Collins “the worst,” helped her nomination to become White House Budget Office chief.
Her online posts confused influential Senator Joe Manchin (DW.Va.) and helped kill the nomination, which required Senate confirmation. The former president of the Center for American Progress had also written that “Vampires have more heart than Ted Cruz.”
When that nomination collapsed in 2021, Biden nominated Tanden to serve as senior adviser and secretary of staff — an influential position that put her at the center of virtually all important issues within the White House.

Tanden previously served as an adviser to Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
Rice is leaving her post after two years on the job, a term the White House said she had committed to.

Tweets about Republicans, including one calling Senator Mitch McConnell “Voldemort,” helped slash her nomination to lead the Office of Management and Budget
“For more than two years, Susan Rice has helped shape and execute my domestic policy agenda, and our country is deeply indebted for her history-making public service,” Biden said in a White House statement.
“I am pleased to announce that Neera Tanden will continue to direct the formulation and implementation of my domestic policies, from economic mobility and racial equality to health care, immigration and education.
Biden named Stefanie Feldman will fill Tanden’s position as staff secretary. She is currently a member of the domestic policy staff.
Zayn Siddique is promoted to deputy head of the Council for Home Affairs.
Rice previously served as National Security Advisor under Obama and UN Ambassador. Her departure also followed backlash over how the administration handled the arrival of immigrant children at the border and reports of their exploitation in the labor market. The White House said it had nothing to do with each other.
