Viewers fume after mishap means words do not appear on screen for them to take pledge of allegiance

“Thanks for ruining it for millions!” ITV viewers outraged after bungled broadcaster fails to display historic Pledge of Allegiance on screen at King Charles’s coronation

Viewers outraged on Saturday morning after an ITV gaffe meant the words of the Pledge of Allegiance didn’t appear on screen during King Charles’s coronation.

The Archbishop of Canterbury had invited people during the ceremony to “weep and swear allegiance” to King Charles.

Before the oath, the presenter said on ITV: ‘The Archbishop invites anyone who wishes to pay homage. The words come on the screen.’

It would say on television, ‘I swear that I will be faithful to Your Majesty and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God’.

Despite the broadcaster promising to help people at home by putting the words on the screen, they never materialized.

Twitter users were angry after the gaffe and took to the social media site to slam the channel.

One person wrote: ‘Haha #ITV failed to put the words “pledge of allegiance” on screen despite saying they would.

“Pledge allegiance to the king, the words will appear on the screen. Except they weren’t! Epic fail.’

Another said: “@’ITV turned around, missed reading the words of tribute, didn’t appear on screen.”

Another wrote: ‘There I was, ready to pledge my allegiance to the King, and ITV failed to put the words on screen.

“Thanks #ITV for ruining it for the millions of us who were watching and wanted to do it!!!”

It comes after Good Morning Britain’s Coronation Special descended into chaos on Saturday morning when a presenter appeared to swear live on air.

Hosted by a variety of presenters including Ben Shephard, Kate Garraway and Susanna Reid, the ITV show focused on the lead up to the momentous occasion.

The public mood over Camilla the Queen Consort has certainly softened in recent years, she is of course now regarded as one of the most senior royals. Kate’s at Buckingham Palace.’

But when Kate started talking when the camera interrupted her, viewers heard a voice they mistakenly assumed was Susanna, saying, “B***h, it’s no good” before Kate promptly continued her broadcast.

The expletive was uttered by correspondent Petronella Wyatt, who later admitted she was responsible for the blunder, but not before viewers blamed the long-serving host.
