  • Arsenal secured a victory despite Katie McCabe missing her penalty

Frida Maanum scored a stunning winner as fourth-placed Arsenal kept up the pressure at the top of the Women’s Super League with a 1-0 win over Leicester.

The Norwegian curled in a long shot just after the hour mark to settle a thrilling game at Meadow Park.

Arsenal were frustrated for much of the game after Katie McCabe saved a penalty in the seventh minute.

The win brought Arsenal within two points of Chelsea in third place and six behind leaders Manchester United, against whom they still have a game in hand.

Arsenal, looking to recover from their Champions League exit on Monday, started strong and had a chance to take an early lead after McCabe was brought down in the area by Hannah Cain.

McCabe stepped up to take the resulting penalty but was denied by the excellent Janina Leitzig.

Leicester threatened through Cain but her shot was blocked by keeper Sabrina D’Angelo before Victoria Pelova deflected a chance for the hosts.

Cain was again denied by D’Angelo in the 62nd minute and had to regret the miss when Maanum picked her spot from the edge of the area after a cut from Jodie Taylor moments later.

Arsenal finished strongly with Taylor hitting the side net and twice forcing Maanum to save Leitzig before hitting the crossbar from a free kick.
