It’s ‘mutilation’: DeSantis to sign bill banning sex change surgeries for minors
It’s ‘mutilation’: DeSantis signs bill banning sex reassignment surgeries for minors as Florida’s legislative session draws to a close and his 2024 presidential announcement expected to be just around the corner
- The bill passed by the Florida legislature on Thursday would ban doctors from giving minors drugs or performing state-funded “gender-affirming” medical procedures
- DeSantis has long been expected to announce whether he will run in the 2024 GOP primary after Florida’s legislative session concludes
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will sign into law banning gender reassignment surgeries on minors as the state’s legislative session ends Friday.
The bill passed by the Florida legislature on Thursday would prohibit doctors from giving minors drugs or performing state-funded “gender-affirming” medical procedures if they are under 18 years old.
“Frankly, it’s like, seriously, some of this stuff is just completely fabricated. And when you talk to people — and I know people in your industry dress it up with a euphemism — and they’ll say it’s health care, to cut off a 14- or 15-year-old’s genitals,” DeSantis said.
‘That’s not a concern. That’s mutilation and that’s what we’re up against,” DeSantis said Friday — the last day of the state’s legislative session.
The governor has long been expected to officially announce his intention to run for president in 2024, once the state’s legislative session comes to an end, so an official announcement could be just around the corner.

Florida’s Republican supermajority in the state legislature pushed forward many signature DeSantis priorities
On Friday, DeSantis appeared to be speaking to the “corporate media,” which he regularly criticizes for changing narrative on issues he says they disagree with.
State Representative Ralph Massullo, a Republican and co-sponsor of the bill, said children “need to reach the point where they realize their gender and can accept themselves.”
Florida’s Republican supermajority in the state legislature has propelled many signature DeSantis priorities, including expanding a law to cover all public school students from kindergarten through 8th grade.
He also signed into law laws banning abortions in the state after six weeks of pregnancy and allowing concealed transportation throughout Florida.
The governor is also expected to sign into law banning diversity, equity and inclusion in state-run colleges.
“After a historic election cycle, we jumped at the opportunity to deliver on our promises and delivered unprecedented results for the Floridians in this legislative session,” DeSantis said Friday.
“We have secured $2.7 billion in tax cuts and the legislature has passed numerous legislative priorities that will improve the lives of Florida families. Thanks to the Legislature for such a productive session.”
Former President Donald Trump, who announced his re-election last November, has already come out running against DeSantis — despite not officially being in the race
It has been reported that, now that the legislative session has ended, DeSantis will announce his official presidential run in June.
Former President Donald Trump, who announced his reelection bid last November, has already come out to DeSantis — despite not officially being in the race.
Trump urged DeSantis not to run against him in 2024 because he is not doing well in the polls, will divide the Republican party and lose “the cherished and massive” MAGA vote.
The ex-president has also called DeSantis “young” and suggested he could have a brighter political future if he remains governor of Florida until the end of his second term in 2026.
