Foodies go wild ahead of the Coronation – with King Charles pizzas and even celebratory sandwiches

Foodies are going wild with their festive dishes in the run-up to the King’s coronation tomorrow.

After ascending the throne in September 2022 following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Charles will be officially crowned King on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

And while thousands of people are expected to be in London to catch a glimpse of the procession, millions more will be watching coverage of the coronation across Britain.

Many have prepared dishes and meals to celebrate the great event, with some very humorous and impressive results.

One person made a meaty sandwich that apparently celebrated the king’s “sausage” fingers, complete with tomato knots and even a cheese signet ring.

It comes as it appeared The coronation quiche, made in honor of the new king, has been stolen from the limelight – with customers favoring coronation chicken ahead of the celebrations this weekend.

Quiches fill carts like a classic party food staple, but the raw ingredients needed to make coronation quiche aren’t popular, according to The times.

Meanwhile, searches for Coronation chicken – made for the late Queen’s coronation in 1953 – have doubled this week on the Waitrose website.

As the nation prepares to come together for festive street parties, searches for festive favorites like trifle have skyrocketed and banners and flags have started popping up across the country.

But no supermarket has seen an increased interest in the ingredients of the Coronation quiche, the newspaper reports.

The dish seems to be inspired by the monarch’s love of gardening and consists of spinach, broad beans and tarragon.

But it drew initial criticism when it was announced at a time when one of the dish’s main ingredients, eggs, was in short supply nationally.

Even the most vociferous royal supporters have since discredited the dish with former cabinet minister Jacob Rees-Mogg admitting he won’t be feasting on a coronation quiche because he finds the savory meal “disgusting”.

“I don’t like quiche, it’s disgusting, I wouldn’t dream of having it – and it has fava beans in it, which are repulsive,” he said.

French food experts have also suggested that the proposed dish is not a quiche, but a pie instead.

Experts from the Lorraine region, where the dish became famous, have pointed out that there is only one kind of quiche, and that is a Quiche Lorraine.

However, Great British Bake Off judge Dame Prue Leith gave her stamp of approval to the Coronation quiche, ruling it to be ‘absolutely delicious’.

The chef and TV presenter became one of the first to try the official coronation pastry at a special large luncheon at Westminster Abbey in April, attended by faith leaders from across the country.

A Big Lunch ambassador, Dame Prue, 83, praised the dish for being “seasonal.”

“The quiche was absolutely delicious,” she said. “There was no soggy bottom, the custard wasn’t overcooked and dry, and the balance of tarragon was perfect—a really good quiche.”

Quiche is universal. Even cold, if the ingredients are right and the dough is nice and buttery, it will taste great.

‘I remember quiche Lorraine being something very special 60 years ago. It’s still one of the tastiest pastries to make.’
