Legal & General is to halt production at its modular home factory in North Yorkshire, putting 475 jobs at risk.
After years of weak demand, the company is reportedly in talks with all 475 employees of L&G Modular Homes in Selby, with the majority being laid off.
L&G blamed “long delays in planning” and the pandemic for weak orders for its pre-built homes. It said it was “unable to bear the large plant’s significant operating costs” as a result.

Bill Hughes, Chairman of the Board of L&G Modular, said: “Legal & General is proud of what we have achieved in bringing a new approach to construction through our factory.
‘However, without the necessary scale of pipelines, it is not sustainable to continue producing more modules.
“We therefore reluctantly propose to reduce business activity and stop production of new modules at the factory.
“We recognize that this will be a challenging and uncertain period for staff and we will actively explore redeployment opportunities.”
