Leeds fans have their say on Sam Allardyce appointment as firefighter aims to avoid relegation

‘Chaos, last chance saloon and we’re going down’: Leeds fans have had their say on Sam Allardyce’s deal with the former England boss being brought in to try and save the club’s Premier League status

  • Sam Allardyce has been appointed manager of Leeds for the rest of the season
  • Leeds are 17th in the Premier League and are threatened with relegation
  • There are four games left of the campaign for Allardyce to help the club

Leeds United have their third manager of the season, with ‘Big Sam’ Allardyce parachuted in to try and save the Yorkshire side from relegation.

Wednesday’s arrival of Allardyce comes after Javi Gracia was sacked on Tuesday, leaving the former Bolton, England and Everton boss to take over the last four games.

The 68-year-old has plenty in his mailbox, with players divided and demoralized and a tough trip away against Manchester City first on Saturday.

Allardyce will be paid £500,000 for those four games in charge, and will receive a further £2.5 million if he manages to keep the Whites level despite the odds.

And below, Leeds fans were addressing the street Mail sports outside Elland Road on their views on Allardyce’s appointment.

One said: ‘I think Leeds now, as it stands, is going down in my opinion just by sheer (poor) performance. With Sam coming in, a new face — we’re in a lot of trouble right now, so with him coming in, a new face can give the guys a boost.

“Mole up a little bit, you know, they need a little push.”

A second added: “I think it’s a total joke to be honest. From the days of (former boss Marcelo) Bielsa, and now we’ve gone downhill with (Jesse) Marsch, and now this… four games, how can anyone keep up with us? It is too late.’

Another continued: “I think the nomination of Sam Allardyce is straw. There they are scraping the barrel. I think it’s a temporary fix, it could be, but I would urge the Leeds United decision-makers to look at a certain Ange Postecoglou, the Australian, who currently leads Celtic.

“He’s the real deal and he’s the man this club needs to get them straight out of the mud.”

While one said, ‘Well, I mean, it’s chaotic. It’s absolutely chaotic. Something has to change though. I think we’re drinking in the last chance saloon right now. I don’t know… Sam Allardyce, it’s worth a try. It’s worth a try, I think.

“There’s been so much chaos, turmoil, everything else — I think we should try something. Do you like the situation? Absolutely not. But I think it must be worth it.’
