Boxing fans have taken to social media to criticize Jayson Santana for throwing a “cheap” and “tasteless” shot that knocked out his opponent over the weekend.

The American super flyweight prospect extended his undefeated professional record to 3-0 with a first-round knockout of Kenneth Jamerson in Memphis, Tennessee.

However, Santana came under fire for the way he knocked out his opponent – with many fans taking to Twitter to call it “tasteless” and “cheap”.

Santana was on a completely different wavelength and took the opportunity to land a powerful left hook on the journeyman.

He followed that up with a strong overhand right to send Jamerson tumbling to the canvas in the first three seconds.

The referee counted the full ten, but Jamerson was unable to get to his feet after Santana’s barrage of punches.

Santana quickly celebrated victory, but fans were not impressed by his performance. They felt the 24-year-old lacked sportsmanship and criticized his decision-making.

One fan wrote, “How could this even happen? Downright stupid. It has to stop. Brings the promotion, sanctioning body and fighter into disrepute. I mean, seriously?!’.

Another fan added: ‘No one is claiming this is against the rules, but it’s certainly not sporting. Shame’.

While one social media user wrote, ‘It’s abundantly clear he was looking for the touch of the glove, he even took the chance at a cheap shot and he took it. However, as the commenter says, protect yourself at all times. Not sporty, but nothing illegal either.’.

Some fans took a different approach, feeling that Jamerson should have protected himself at all costs after the bell rang.

One of them wrote, “That’s why most boxing coaches will tell you not to touch gloves unless the ref asks before the fight. You’re not here to be friends.’

Another added: “I can’t say I respect the fighter in this situation. But they do say: protect yourself at all times for a reason’.

One fan said: ‘You don’t have to touch gloves when the bell sounds, you touch gloves while the referee gives you instructions during the face-off, so in theory he didn’t do anything wrong’.
