February’s dramatic game beat the 114.4 million viewers who tuned in for Super Bowl XLIX as the New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks on NBC Sports.

It was previously revealed that 113 million people tuned in for the Chiefs’ glory, but Nielsen looked at the data and found irregularities in the coding and measurement of outdoor views.

“We feel pretty optimistic about this matchup,” Michael Mulvihill, head of strategic analysis at Fox, told Front Office Sports before the game.

“Pretty bullish on the affected markets. Great about the momentum the league has gained this week.

“We’re looking for 115 million viewers, which would be a new record.”

The Thanksgiving afternoon game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys set the tone for the most watched NFL regular season game ever.

The Cowboys’ 28–20 victory over Fox drew an average of 42 million viewers, according to Nielsen, surpassing the average of 41.55 million for the December 3, 1990, Monday night game between the Giants and San Francisco 49ers on ABC. Average viewership record numbers date back to 1988.

The average viewership for the three Thursday Thanksgiving Day games was 33.5 million, surpassing the previous high of 32.9 million in 1993 when two games were broadcast.
