Host is blasted by guets for putting meat in a tofu dish

Host is scolded by guests for putting meat in a tofu dish eaten by vegetarians – but who do you think was wrong?

A partygoer has revealed how they caused a stir after mixing tofu with pork in a dish they brought to a gathering.

Post to Reddit’s Am I The A ****** threadthe person, presumably from the US, explained that dishes at the party were not labeled – but once asked by a guest if the meal was vegetarian, they revealed it was not.

But one vegetarian partygoer who heard this was “shocked that she ate meat,” and the Reddit poster added, “It turns out that many other vegetarians ate my dish thinking it was vegetarian.”

“Throughout the rest of the party, I heard so many people (non-vegetarians too) telling me I’m a (a******) for putting meat in a vegetarian dish,” they added.

But the Reddit user went on to explain that the item they made was actually a traditional recipe they grew up with and that they considered tofu an ingredient, not a meat substitute.

They ended their story by revealing that no one had asked if the dish was vegetarian before they ate and asked if they were the a****** or if the other people were overreacting.

Their message read, “This happened at a potluck. I had a dish that was tofu stir fried with minced pork, ginger and spring onions. Similar to Mapo tofu, but not spicy.

‘Everything was fine, except when someone asked me if my dish was halal, I said no, it has pork in it.

Then Jen heard and was shocked that she ate meat. And it turns out that many other vegetarians ate my dish assuming it was vegetarian.

“During the rest of the party, I heard so many people (including non-vegetarians) say that I am a ****** if I put meat in a vegetarian dish.

‘But this is a dish I grew up with, tofu is just an ingredient to me, not strictly a meat substitute. Also no one asked me if my dish was vegetarian. So am I the asshole here or are people just overreacting?’

After a deluge of comments, the original poster clarified the situation further, adding, “Because so many people are asking for it. Nothing was labelled.

“I just left the dish on the buffet table along with the rest of the dishes. There were many other meat dishes.

‘About 20 people at the party, 4 of them vegetarians. Nobody asked about my dish except the person who asked if it was halal.’

People who commented in the thread unanimously agreed that the original poster was right.

One Reddit user wrote, “They assumed it was a vegetarian dish because they have this weird misconception that tofu is only for vegetarians. It’s on them that they didn’t bother to ask.’

‘Chinese tofu dishes (and other vegetable dishes!) often contain pork to add flavour. It’s not your fault they didn’t know, and I bet they’ve accidentally eaten pork at Chinese eateries since they didn’t,’ another person agreed.

A third social media user added, “Mapo tofu usually comes with meat. The person who asked if it was halal was responsible.

“The vegetarians who ate it were not responsible. I live in an extremely health-conscious area and know several people with allergies, so I’ve started making a list of ingredients with the dishes I bring to potlucks.’

Another person replied, “I understand why people saw tofu and assumed to be vegetarian, but if they had looked closer, they should have seen the minced pork as well.”

‘Also ultimately it is up to an individual to ensure that everything they eat is in line with their dietary preferences. If there’s an unlabeled dish at a potluck, it’s definitely best to ask.’
