Warrington Town have been promoted to the sixth tier of the National League North – exactly 58 years ago their most famous former player Roger Hunt won the FA Cup for Liverpool.
A packed house of 2,500 spectators at Warrington’s Cantilever Park burst into cheers at the final whistle after Isaac Buckley-Ricketts scored the 90th-minute winning goal in the Northern Premier League play-off final against Bamber Bridge to win 1-0 .
Hunt played for Warrington, then called Stockton Heath Albion, until 1959 when he signed for Liverpool.
He won the league championship and scored in the FA Cup Final against Leeds on 1 May 1965 before returning to Wembley the following year to help England win the World Cup.
Warrington is traditionally a rugby league town, but their FA Cup win against Exeter in 2014 helped lift the average crowd from 150 to this season’s 700, with chairman Toby Macormac hoping to continue his rise to the EFL.
