‘I want to know I can take care of a child’: Sam Thompson says his desire to start a family with girlfriend Zara McDermott prompted him to find out he has ADHD
Sam Thompson revealed that it was his desire to become a father that ultimately drove him to seek help for his ADHD.
The former Made In Chelsea star, 30, who was recently diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), opened up about his struggles on Sunday.
The TV personality admitted that one day he “really wants kids,” but felt like he “couldn’t even take care of himself” and had to find a way to cope.
He told OK! magazine: ‘A big thing for me was children, I want children and I want to know if I can take care of a child. I want to know that I am the breadwinner and the caretaker and that I can be the security the child needs to grow up.
“I was like, ‘I don’t feel like I can take care of myself often.’ The older I got, the more I thought about it.’

Sam said his girlfriend and former Love Island beauty Zara McDermott has been a huge help with daily activities.
On the new reality show Sam Thompson: Is This ADHD?, Zara revealed that she sometimes gets frustrated when she does things for her lover, such as administrative jobs.
Sam revealed it was “really hard” to listen to how Zara felt as he “didn’t know how much it had affected her before.”
Speaking about his condition, Zara said she doesn’t want to do the job for the MIC star, but “just has to because it makes his life easier and she loves him.”
Sam gushed about his relationship with Zara, saying it’s gone from strength to strength since his diagnosis because his “communication is better.”
The Staying Relevant podcaster added that he “definitely” hopes to start a family and marry the Love Island star at some point, but she is currently busy with her career.
Sam said: ‘Yes. Absolute. I’ve always known I want to be with her for the rest of my life, that’s a given. I’m definitely not engaged, but I love her dearly. I don’t want to be with anyone else.’
In his new TV series, after being diagnosed with ADHD, Sam decided to try some drugs to help him focus and so took a low dose of a drug called Elvanse.

Despite the TV personality feeling “slower and not in a bad way” because of this, he struggled with some side effects, such as not being able to sleep and loss of appetite.
Sam decided to stop taking the drug, but after his diagnosis he is a lot “more self-aware” and takes a breather when he has “a moment that really helps.”
The reality star also uses other coping mechanisms such as therapists, behaviorists and “about 1,000 fidget spinners.”
